Sconce comes from the French word esconse, which is defined as screened lantern. A wall sconce is,
typically, mounted to the wall and is hard-wired to a junction box enclosed in the wall, directly behind the sconce. However, they can also be attached to the wall and have the electrical wiring concealed by a cord cover and plug into an electrical outlet elsewhere on the wall. As with Bath/Vanity fixtures Sconces have become a staple for lighting hallways, and setting the decorative mood of the space, whether in dining areas, bedrooms, stairwells or foyers.
